The PPD&D workgroup has been working on creating public dialogues related to the following questions:
1. How do we create a training model that: meets the needs of all practitioners to improve their knowledge and skills; guides them through a variety of ways of gaining knowledge; honors the knowledge and perspectives they already have, and helps them to improve and understand their level of cross cultural competency?
2. Professionalism can gain us respect and often leads to higher pay and greater access to resources. But becoming more “professional” can also create problems if we ignore the value of practical experience, informal mentoring and culturally specific knowledge. How do we reap the benefits of professionalism while retaining the valuable elements of our current system?
In the absence of any pre-existing training of trainers curriculum in Minnesota, the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) funded the development of Teaching the Art of Training; Module 1: Delivery Skills and Module 2: Design Skills to more systematically support training of trainers. The modules use a standardized curriculum targeted toward the early and school-age care and education field with a specific focus on elements of adult learning, cultural diversity and transfer of learning.
A partnership of several content experts wrote sections and both modules were edited and formatted by a consultant. DHS is currently in the process of developing a Child Care Professional Development system which includes a trainer infrastructure and trainer approval process. These modules are available until such time as DHS officially determines the best tools and resources it can support for training trainers.
The Modules can be accessed on the MnSMART website at: http://www.mnsmart.org/
